How it is calculated
The tool tries each way the carton can be turned (or only the two upright ways, if you tick "this way up"), counts how many fit along the length, width and height of the container, and keeps the best. It then checks the total weight against the container's maximum payload, and your quantity if you gave one.
Container sizes are Hapag-Lloyd's published example specifications. 20' standard: inside 5,900 × 2,352 × 2,395 mm, 33.2 CBM, maximum payload 28,130 kg; 40' standard: inside 12,032 × 2,352 × 2,395 mm, 67.7 CBM, maximum payload 28,750 kg; 40' high cube: inside 12,032 × 2,350 × 2,700 mm, 76.3 CBM, maximum payload 28,600 kg. Boxes from other owners differ by a few centimeters and kilograms.
Real loads fit fewer: pallets, dunnage, bracing, door clearance and mixed sizes all take space, and heavy cargo must be spread evenly and stay within any road weight limits on the way.
